How to Ship a Balikbayan Box from San Jose to the Philippines

A practical San Jose guide to shipping a balikbayan box to the Philippines — Atlas Shippers pricing, drop-off vs pickup, transit time, what to pack, and how the Bay Area process actually works.

Published

Shipping a balikbayan box from San Jose to the Philippines is simpler than most people think: you buy an Atlas box, pack it at home, drop it off (or schedule a pickup), and Atlas handles the ocean freight, customs manifest, and door-to-door delivery in about two months. This guide walks through the local process — pricing, timing, and the small decisions that save money or avoid headaches.

The quick version

  1. Pick up an Atlas balikbayan box at an authorized partner. In San Jose, Mailbox Plus on McKee Road sells Regular, Macho, Junior, and Travel-size Atlas boxes.
  2. Pack at home at your own pace.
  3. Drop off the packed box to save $10, or schedule a pickup if you can’t drive in.
  4. Fill out the customs manifest (packing list) at drop-off.
  5. Atlas ships by sea and delivers door-to-door anywhere in the Philippines — Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao — in roughly two months.

What it costs

Pricing is by box size and destination zone. As of July 2025, a Regular box (23” × 17” × 20”) to Metro Manila is $73 drop-off / $83 pickup. A Macho box (24” × 18” × 24”) is $88 drop-off / $98 pickup. Empty boxes are $5–$18 if you want to pack before you drive in.

Zones add $5–$35 for destinations beyond Metro Manila — Zone 2 is nearby provinces (Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, Rizal), Zone 3 covers the rest of Luzon, Zone 4 is the Visayas (Cebu, Iloilo, Bohol), and Zone 5 is Mindanao (Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga). See the full pricing table and zone list for current rates.

For qualified Filipino senders, balikbayan boxes with non-commercial contents are duty-free under long-standing Philippine Bureau of Customs policy — but the customs manifest is still required at drop-off.

Drop-off vs pickup — which to choose

Drop-off saves $10 per Regular or Macho box. Same ocean transit, same door-to-door delivery, same tracking. If you can drive to San Jose, drop-off is almost always worth it.

Pickup is worth the extra when:

  • You have three or more boxes (loading a truck is faster than multiple car trips).
  • You can’t drive or don’t have a vehicle large enough for a filled Macho box.
  • You live outside the immediate Bay Area and the drive is impractical.

How long it actually takes

Plan for about two months from drop-off to delivery at your recipient’s door. Metro Manila and Cebu tend to arrive a bit faster; remote provinces in Mindanao or northern Luzon can take longer.

Christmas shipments are the exception. Volumes spike from August through November, and late-September shipments are risky for remote destinations. If the box needs to arrive before Christmas, see our California balikbayan box Christmas cutoff guide (coming soon) or call ahead to confirm current booking windows.

What to pack — and what to skip

Good to ship: canned food, toiletries, clothing, shoes, children’s toys, school supplies, small kitchen tools, gifts, non-perishable groceries, bedding, and everyday household goods.

Don’t ship: fresh food or produce, large liquid containers (small sealed bottles of toiletries are fine), flammable items (aerosols, lighter fluid, fireworks), firearms or ammunition, loose lithium batteries (batteries inside devices are generally fine), or anything restricted by US export or Philippine import rules.

Take photos of high-value items before sealing the box, and keep a copy of your manifest. Atlas provides basic liability coverage on every shipment, and additional insurance is available for high-value contents — call Atlas directly at (800) 285-2797 to add coverage or file a claim.
